September 2007
Dear Friends,
On an morning walk we are reminded of the precious nature of the honeybee. Bushes and vines hang heavy with their yield, all pollinated by bees. Fruits abound on the viburnum, black cherry, rose hip, winterberry, chokeberry, beach plum, pear, and apple. Island meadows burst with goldenrod and the promise of honey. Our bees are doing just fine and as the mystery of colony collapse disorder is debated we are thankful that so far the pesticides and viruses that have devastated the rest of the country have not found their way to this gem of an island. We are grateful to the bees and to the natural, pristine, beauty of this place.
After teaching in Providence(CVS Highlander Charter School) and at the Hog Pen (BI Maritime Institute) Abby has been transplanted to the Pacific. As an educator at Catalina Island Marine Institute she is thrilled to be teaching marine science to grades 4-12 and cozying up with new species both marine and terrestrial.
Stu is majoring in environmental studies at Eckerd after a summer of spear fishing, candle making, metal sculpting, and volunteering for BI Maritime institute. As a junior, he hopes to engage in underwater adventures in a different hemisphere next semester. Look for new images in his work next summer.
Sue continues counseling in her private practice and training at the Relational Life Institute. After studying yoga for a dozen years she will release her first yoga CD entitled “Tidal Flow” this fall (see page 12). Extra curricular include the BI Poetry Project and African drumming.
Chris is enjoying his work with The Nature Conservancy as much as ever. His role in marine conservation and habitat restoration has taken him across the country, to the Sargasso Sea and even underwater. After a 20 year hiatus he is thrilled to be actively scuba diving again.
Another turn of the wheel and many thanks to Jeremy our number one doer of everything and our holiday helpers Suzanne and Marion. And of course thanks to our summer cadre of family and friends who helped harvest and market the honey: Abby, Gillian, Stu, Allix, Noah, Sara and Krista.
Be well, enjoy more and do less.
